Throughout Canadian history, there have always been instinces of descrimination and predjudice. This website strives to specifically discuss the struggles of Jewish immigrants in Canada, and the various forms of anti-semitism they had to face.
Although it was not an official force, it is undeniable anti-semitism has always been present in Canada. It is an underlying factor which would end up contributing to the biased desicions made by the government and specific individuals during 1867-1939.
Understandably, before Jews began immigrating to Canada around the 1800's, ansti-Semitsm already existed, and expressions of it were tolerable. This would only become worse throughout the course of time, as more Jews began seeking refuge in Canada due to WWII.
However, the earliest, and perhaps most significant display of predjudice in Canada, was the expulsion of Ezekial Hart from the Quebec legislature. Since he was sworn in on a Hebrew bible as opposed to a Christian one, many believed he should not be allowed to participate within the assembly. The event sparked a lot of controversy, and was the begining of a long histroy of anti-semitism in Canada.
The public would later be influenced by various individuals and organizations. Ultimitely, the actions of such people would lead to the various acts of descrimination by the Canadian government, schools, universities, companies/workplaces, and society in general. This can be seen with examples such as the Christie Pits Riot, the Voyage of St. Louis, the deprivation of certain human rights, and immigration restrictions made by the government.
